How to Prepare for Your Baby's First Photoshoot

Tips from Nicole DeHoff Photography

Welcoming a new baby into your family is an incredible journey, filled with precious moments that you'll want to capture forever. A professional photoshoot can help you preserve these memories, especially during those fleeting early days. As a mother of five and a photographer specializing in maternity and newborn photography, I've compiled some essential tips to help you prepare for your baby’s first photoshoot, ensuring it goes smoothly and results in beautiful images you'll cherish for a lifetime.

1. Choose the Right Time

Timing is everything! For newborn shoots, it's ideal to schedule your session within the first two weeks of your baby’s arrival. During this time, babies tend to sleep deeply, making it easier to capture those adorable curled-up poses. If you're planning a maternity shoot, consider timing it for around 28-36 weeks into your pregnancy, when your baby bump is beautifully pronounced but you're still comfortable.

2. Location

Nicole DeHoff Photography has a beautiful commercial space in the heart of Suwanee, GA. This studio is stocked with everything needed for a successful maternity and newborn session. If your photographer does not have a studio, make sure you discuss appropriate and safe locations for your session.

3. Outfit Selection

Nicole DeHoff Photography offers a client closet available to all clients who have scheduled their maternity or newborn session. Nicole will help curate your session to best fit your personality.

4. Plan for Feeding and Changing

Babies can be unpredictable, so plan ahead for feeding and changing during the shoot. Make sure to have everything ready: diapers, wipes, and an extra outfit (just in case!). A well-fed and comfortable baby is key to a successful photoshoot. If you can, feed your little one upon arrival of the session to help them feel relaxed and content. Nicole keeps the studio well stocked, in case you forget anything.

5. Consider the Time of Day

Newborn photoshoots are best scheduled mid morning. Baby's tend to be at their sleepiest during this time. Expect to spend a couple of hours at the studio during your newborn session. Bring a book, lunch, ipad, etc. or take a nap and enjoy some relaxation.

6. Props and Accessories

Nicole provides all props and accessories for your session. If you have a specific idea in mind, mention it ahead of time so Nicole can have something special made to order for your session,

7. Relax and Enjoy the Moment

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, but remember that the goal of the shoot is to capture the joy of this precious time in your life. Relax, breathe, and enjoy the moment! If your baby gets fussy or restless, don't worry. I’m experienced in working with newborns and can adapt to their needs. Sometimes the best moments happen when you’re just enjoying your time together.

8. Trust Your Photographer

Finally, trust your photographer! As your photographer, I’m here to guide you through the process. Communicate your vision and any specific requests, and together we’ll create a session that reflects your family’s love and connection.

Preparing for your baby’s first photoshoot is all about creating a comfortable environment that allows your family’s love to shine through. With a little planning and a positive mindset, we can capture stunning images that will serve as timeless keepsakes of this incredible chapter in your life.
